First NHRA Top Fuel victory for Clay Millican
Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tennessee
The winners were
- Clay Millican (Top Fuel)
- Ron Capps (Funny Car)
- Alex Laughlin (Pro Stock)
- Tii Tharpe (Top Fuel Harley)
They took home victories in their respective classes on Sunday at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals.
How it went
The 51 year old Clay Millican had an emotional time after winning his 1st Top Fuel. He sealed the deal after qualifying No. 4 & then defeating Kyle Wurtzel, Brittany Force & Steve Torrence on his way to the final verses Leah Pritchett. With a cylinder out on Pritchett’s machine, Millican just managed to edge the Don Schumacher Racing driver out with a 3.825.
Milllican said he loves what he does. There are certain times that I thought if I was able to do such a thing. I am really happy for David Grubnic & all of the boys who work on this car & I give them 100% credit for that.
Funny Car Ron Capps picked up his 5th victory in 7 races in Funny Car, but it was his 1st since Kansas back in May. The driver qualified a disappointing 10th, but was able to beat Alexis DeJoria, Robert Hight & Matt Hagan on his way to meet Jack Beckman. Beckman got down the track quicker but Capps took the victory on a Holeshot. The 2 also faced each other in the final last weekend where Beckman took home the victory.
Capps said that they got few lucky rounds and it has been preparation in the off season. Furthermore, we had runs verses 4 of the toughest cars, drivers & crew chiefs combined on Sunday.
They said that it takes a lot to be able to pull out a car and prepare it in such a short time, we have the best in our set-up.
Alex Laughlin became the 8th different winner in 11 races this season after a narrow victory over Bo Butner in the final. Laughlin had already put an end to the days of Allen Johnson, Alex Laughlin & Tanner Gray after qualifying in the No. 8 spot.
Laughlin stated that they did not have anything handed to us, we had some good matchups all day. We have a competitive car on the starting line and I had something to prove as I was also having the confidence.
Tii Tharpe took home his 2nd Wally of the season after beating Jay Turner in the final.
The stars of NHRA will return for more action for the fans next weekend. The Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at the Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.
