Cricket was shook by another unfortunate incident when a young Pakistan batsman Zubair Ahmed died after being struck by a bouncer during a domestic match in Mardan. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) took to social media to announce this sad news. The Twitter release stated “Tragic death of Zubair Ahmed is another reminder that safety gear i.e. helmet must be worn at all times. Our sympathies with Zubair’s family,”.

The incident occurred on August 14, which coincides with Pakistan’s Independence Day.

Zubair featured in 4 List A matches & represented the T20 team Quetta Bears.

Earlier on the same day, Australian vice-captain David Warner retired hurt after being struck in the neck by a lethal bouncer during a warm-up match ahead of the upcoming Bangladesh tour.

A focus on player safety has been the highest priority since the tragic death of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes three years back in 2014.

Hughes, who played twenty six Tests, died from bleeding on the brain in November 2014 after being struck on the lower part of the skull by a rising ball from fast bowler Sean Abbott during a domestic match at the SCC in Sydney.

Hughes however was wearing the prescribed protective head gear but the ball struck him at the back of the head under the helmet.

One can say that Ben Stokes is a superb all-rounder in modern-day cricket and 1 of the best in that. And this Englishman has yet again proved his worth with a highly impressive performance, both with the bat and with ball. He turned the complexion of the match with his brilliant knock for which he won the man of the match and delivered the goods with ball too.

Stokes took 2 wickets in 2 balls to leave England eyeing a win at stumps on Day 4 of 3rd Test in London.

South Africa were reeling at 117-4 at stumps on the 4th day of the test match further needing another 375 runs to win. The target was 492.

The 4th test begins in Friday which means hardly 48 hours between 2 tests. It will take place at the Old Trafford hence preparations will start on Wednesday.

The 1St half of the series followed a similar pattern. England won the 1st Test at Lord’s with plenty to spare but when the 2nd match at Trent Bridge started 5 days later, they were off the pace. South Africa dominated the game & won by 340 runs. It was typical of England’s Test cricket since Trevor Bayliss was hired as coach 2 years ago: impressive in 1 game, poor in the next one.

If Joe Root had the chance to talk to his celebrating players after their 239-run defeat of South Africa – and there was also Moeen Ali’s share of champagne to be drunk after his hat-trick – he should have told them it was a near-perfect team performance for a Test side including three debutants.

Sri Lanka team

Sri Lanka by the 16th over lost Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis & Dinesh Chandimal before Angelo Mathews took them to safety taking them to 161-3.

They were going well when Amir came & took the wicket of Mathews (39) who bottom-edged a pull shot onto the stumps. Junaid came to take the debutant Dhananjaya de Silva’s wicket caught behind for just 1 run.

Pakaistan started to find some movement in the turf. On the contrary opener Niroshan Dickwella gave some stability to Sri Lanka. He paced his innings well, scoring 4 boundaries before he was taken back by Sarfraz’s diving catch off Amir’s bowling. Thisara Perera too did not trouble the scorers.

As Sri Lanka looked to be heading towards a score of around 250, Hasan claimed Suranga Lakmal (26) wicket with a good slower-ball off-cutter which just clipped the bail.

Pakistan chasing

They came to chase 236 and got a great start by debutant Fakhar Zahman scoring his 1st 50 off 36 balls, but then fell with a hook off Nuwan Pradeep to deep square leg.

Pakistan being Pakistan panicked and lost Azhar Ali (34), Babar Azam (10) & Mohammad Hafeez (1) in quick succession. Experienced Shoaib also gave away his wicket to Malinga’s slower ball.

They were soon 162-7 and seemed to go down but here was the unexpected

Sarfraz and Amir recorded the 8th wicket partnership of 75 balls to take them home safely. Amir remained unbeaten on 28 while captain got a good 60+ score to his name.

This game was lost by Sri Lanka as they dropped Sarfraz 2 times.

Sri Lanka firstly did not get the big score, nor did they do well in the field to restrict Pakistan in a game they should have won due to the dropped catches.
